The outbreak of the swine flu in Mexico hit the Mexican Peso, "carry trades" and dollar benefit

The outbreak of this swine flu in Mexico has transcended fears that the disease could well develop into a global pandemic. In the past, investors have always been very reluctant to believe that things such as SARS or mad cow disease may have an impact on the market. However, investors are not reacting in the same way this time round: the Mexican Peso is in sharp decline of over 4% this morning against the greenback, the "carry trades" are under pressure. The Australian dollar and New Zealand Dollar are falling too. The Japanese yen and the US dollar are the winners.
